About Sam

Sam in 1988

In junior high school, Samantha Stevens asked why every person in America was not equal under the law. As a teenager, she joined the fight for women’s rights and since then she has remained committed to fighting for equal rights and equal access for all Californians. Now, after more than 30 years of activism and leadership on policy and in politics, Stevens has launched a campaign for Assembly to put a lifetime of principled activism to work for the families of the west San Fernando Valley.

Stevens is a lifelong Democrat and has excelled in the highest levels of state government and the labor movement. She has served as Policy Director for Assemblymember Lloyd Levine and District Director for Assemblymember Bob Blumenfield in what is now the 45th Assembly District. Prior to that, she worked for City Attorney Mike Feuer, Governor Gray Davis, and worked as the Government Relations Director for SEIU Local 721 in Los Angeles where she served on the SEIU California Executive Board. Currently, she serves as President of the Stevens Consulting Group a Los Angeles-based government and public relations firm.

Throughout her career, Stevens has always remained true to the values of inclusion and the moral imperative that demands human rights for all. A 40-year resident of the San Fernando Valley, Stevens has held elected positions as a Delegate in the California Democratic Party and as a member of the Los Angeles County Democratic Party Central Committee. She has served as Vice-President of the National Women’s Political Caucus/San Fernando Valley and Vice-President of the Los Angeles National Organization for Women (NOW).

Stevens has never ceased advocating for legislation to protect children, strengthen families, create jobs, and has always encouraged women to enter politics. In the spirit of those ideals, she has donated her time to the Action Democrats of the San Fernando Valley, the Feminist Majority Foundation, the Los Angeles County Young Democrats, the National Women’s Political Caucus, Planned Parenthood and the Stonewall Democratic Club.

Stevens, age 49, received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Government from Claremont McKenna College.
